old German atmosphere, quality food and beers
by indyone at Citysearch
Stepping into the Rathskeller is a treat for the eyes, as well as the stomach. The room has fine art quality stained glass windows, an intriguing fireplace with dark sculptures and mottos in German, and other cultural pieces that contribute to the feeling of being in a small town in Germany instead of Indianapolis. The sausages and meats are top quality from local German butchers, and the meals are flavorful and substantial. My husband's favorite is the Beef Rouladen, while I alternate between Kassler Ripchen and the German sausages with kraut. The beers are another tasty bonus.
My daughter had her wedding rehearsal dinner here, and the out of town guests thought it was a treasure.
Fun place to go with friends

Anytime I am in Indy, I try to make it here at least once. Good food, fun atmosphere, and great live music. Can be crowded, but it is a fun diverse crowd.

Great for beer lovers

Great for lovers of beer! They have large and small bottles of tons of European gems (including my favorite - LaChouffe!). The Biergarden is for sure the place to be in Spring, Summer and early Fall. You always run into someone you know! Great place for pre-pub crawls, and to celebrate your love of great Euro-beer!
- Pros: Great location, Outdoor Dining, Expensive
- Cons: Bad parking, Really busy, Closes early

German food is the specialty in this historic building that author Kurt Vonnegut's grandfather designed.

The Scene
What started as a German social club in the late 1800s still has a social feel, thanks to an extensive selection of beers from Germany, Belgium and elsewhere, and German expressions on the wall. (One translates to: "Moderation is good and fine, but don't overdo it.") Diners find themselves surrounded by handsome dark wood, statues and beer steins.
The Food
Start with a heaping appetizer for two featuring bratwurst, bockwurst, juicy kielbasse and German wieners with sauerkraut and sweet-and-sour red cabbage. Segue into kassler ripchen--two thick pork chops coated in a lightly sweet glaze accented with apples and raisins, or schnitzel cordon bleu, a crispy, breaded slice of pork loin smothered in ham, Swiss cheese and sauteed mushrooms. Add a side of doughy spaetzle noodles in brown gravy, a dense potato pancake and an apple strudel a la mode and you're ready for a long, satisfying sleep.

Best German Bar ever!!!
by indyroadtrip at Citysearch
I visit this place every year when I visit Indy. It is what every German bar should be. Great food, atmosphere, and people. Not a place to get Budweiser, you've got to try their huge selection of imports. Their food is some of the best in Indy. It can get crowded in there. There is a restaurant section and a bar section. You can eat at both. I eat in the bar. Highly recommended.
- Pros: food, beer, atmosphere
- Cons: can get crowded

One of the best bars/restaurant that I have visited. Old world feel and the bartenders are the best bar none. Biergarten is a great time.
- Pros: great beer, good service
- Cons: can get crowded
Schmeckt Sehr Gut!

We came from DC area for a convention, hunting good German restaurants since ours closed as proprietors aged. Frieda is from Munich and she loved it! The atmosphere on Sunday in the big dining hall was subdued but really Bavarian down home. In fact, last time in Munch I saw few places which came close. We eat out a lot, found the food really great and prices reasonable by INDY standards and a steal by DC rates. The selection of beers was a delight and all excellent choices - I tried the sampler. Three of us in our party got a broad selection and all were great with really friendly servers. Now I can kick myself for not staying at the convention another day just to enjoy this place some more with entertainment to boot. The place to put on an out-of-town visitor A list.
- Pros: Authentic, Delicious, Atmosphere
