Worth the Drive from the Northside

We took a drive out to The Diner after finding out about it on this guide. What a hoot! It's right in the middle of all of these run-down motels. The diner is just like the one seen in ER. The staff was down to earth and genuine. Most importantly, the food was great. Not great selection if you're counting calories, but they do offer a grilled chicken on the menu. We all got the burgers and were thrilled with them. As a side, you can get home fries with onions. Greasy and delicious!!! The atmosphere is fun, my toddler had a blast staring at herself in the mirrored walls. This place is not your Ed Debevics of Chicago, this is a real, side of the road diner. We loved it.
- Pros: Price, Atmosphere, Taste
- Cons: Location, Limited Menu
Just one of a number of '50s-style boxcar diners located off the old U.S. Route 40.

In Short
The Diner's classic atmosphere and old-school American menu make it worth a stop. This diner is the real deal--original chrome, neon signs and counter stools make it fun for anyone from truckers to families to kitschy first dates. Lunchtime is busy, but it's a good time to go to soak up the local color. Sit at the counter and order like they did in the old days.

For a great 50's and 60's feel with a simple menu, try this place. They have great burgers and fries. Don't forget the sodas and shakes. Nice, cheery atmosphere, with an old jukebox filled with classic Rock 'n' Roll. Great place for kids, too. Go during an off peak eating time, as peak times can get crowded.
