Best Drive-In Period!
by mmmthatsgood
This is THE place to get a frosty mug of homemade rootbeer and a basket of onion rings! My personal favorite is the pizza burger with all the fixings. With the old school car hops and lights on for service, it really reminds me of a 1950s style place. I have never had a bad meal there, and always look forward to going back. Even though the pizza burger is my fave, sometimes you just have to get one of their delicious coney dogs or corndogs. I can't get enough!
- Pros: Root Beer, Onion Rings, all the food
- Cons: None

- Pros: Good food
- Cons: none I can think of.
Mug N Bun Best Food with Memories
by gaillyons
This is my first message. I am origianlly from Speedway and was a car hop (earrly and mid 60's) for the Mug n Bun when owned by Morris May and my dad owned the gas station across the street, now known as the tobacco road (gas pumps that are there were my dad's that originate back to 1964). The Mug n Bun has kept the fine tradition of the best conies, real french fries, and root beer since Morris opened it from day 1. I am proud to say the service is still just acceptional as always. I was away from the area for over 30 years, but now i never want to leave so I can still go back to visit memories of a wonderful time in 50's and 60's that Mug N Bun still preserves for all of us who call Speedway home. Let the atmosphere of the car hops remind you of what good service is.

Great restaurant for the whole family! The best root beer I've ever had, and extremely nice and friendly owner and workers. Although I'm not from the area, I would go back just for this restaurant.
Best drive-in, best Pizza in Indy
by thehick
Lived in Indy (West side) for 7 years, loved the place. Onion rings and tenderloin were great! My wife loves the Pizza burger with the cheese cooked inside the meat! They have a seperate building for take out Pizza, Pizza is great! The pizza is second only to Bellos in Madison.
- Pros: Root Beer, Burgers, Pizza
- Cons: hard to find parking in summer time
Take it from a Speedway native...

I lived in Speedway for 20 years. This place is awsome. There homemade Rootbeer and Onion Rings should be rated best in the world. They have tons of Shake and Malt flavors including Cherry, Lemon, Peanut Butter, and Butterscott to name a few and you can mix them. My personal fav is Peanutbutter/Chocolate, pure heaven. There tenderloins and footlong hot dogs are excellent as well. There menu is HUGE and still expanding. Everytime I go there there is at least one new item being offered. It doesn't matter what you're in the mood are, chances are, they make it. They ran the near by Dog n' Suds and Sonic into the ground within 1 to 2 years. The outside dining area has been upgraded over the past few years. It is now roofed AND HAS HEATERS FOR WINTER. All in all, this is one of my favorite places to eat.
- Pros: HUGE menu, Friendly Environment, Homemade Root Beer
best tenderloins I ever had!
by mommaboop
Love it! Used to work nearby, and every nice day some friends and I would pile in the car to get really drive-in food. HUGE tenderloins, not thin and pounded out even thinner, but with some real meat in them, excellent homemade fries and the root beer, made on the premises, creamy & frosty, is to die for.....I'm hungry just thinking about it!
Overated
by c280mike
Overpriced, dry, burgers, don't use real icecream in the floats. Overall disappointed. Am used to the real thing (California drive-ins, like Mel's in "American Grafitti".)
- Cons: overpriced, dry burgers, bad floats
This Westside landmark serves curbside double cheeseburgers with Wonderbread tucked between the patties.

The Scene
One of a handful of original drive-in restaurants in the area, Mug-n-Bun continues to hang trays of burgers and fries on customers' car windows at this squat cement block building. Mug-n-Bun has nothing to do with all that funky retro stuff that new eateries are trying to replicate with their spanking-new Naugahyde and Coca-Cola color schemes. Mug-n-Bun's unflattering yellow and brown paint and no-nonsense car-hops--not on roller skates, thank you very much--is the real deal. Turn on your headlights when you're ready to order, and don't honk your horn under any circumstance.
The Food
Get ready for some old-fashioned double cheeseburgers with Wonderbread slices between the patties, wagon wheel breaded tenderloins, Coney dogs, and large onion rings. Wash it all down with Mug-n-Bun's own supersweet, frothy root beer. Get it with a dollop of soft-serve ice cream, and you've got the perfect root beer float.
best on the west side

Great home made onion rings, batter dipped and fried to order. Huge tenderloin sandwiches (big enough for three) tomatoes hand sliced thick - not sliced paper thin on a slicer. Home made rootbeer that you can have served in a frosted mug, or buy by the gallon to take home. Home made chili that is always perfect. Can you tell that I'm a regular?
