For the most part the staff was friendly. One was real patient when giving directions to the museum. One was very passionate about the exhibit. The art collection was extensive and broadranging. Even the stairs looked like art! The overall ambiance of the rooms would take you back in time. Pucks restaurant inside was very tasty and customer-friendly.

I wish I would have known they were doing construction which, will be ready in 2005. The finished part is beautiful. The collection currently only goes up to the French Impressionism era. Which, was kind of disappointing. The IMA is a great place to bring a date. The have it set up so you can walk right up to the pictures. Security gaurds roam each room and watch carefully so no one will touch but, the expierence is one of a kind. I think it would be nice to see the grounds in the spring/ summer. I am sure when the construction is finished IMA will be one of the best in the country.

  • Pros: Beautiful Grounds, Free Admission, Friendly Help
  • Cons: , No Modern Art

The Scene
It's one of the prettiest places in Indy with 152 acres of trails, gardens, a greenhouse and statues surrounding a beautiful 19th-century building. Two restaurants on the grounds, the Museum Cafe and Garden on the Green, make for elegant luncheons. Visit either gift shop, one in the main building and one in the greenhouse, for a memento of your visit.

The Collection
You may have seen Robert Indiana's stacked-letter "Love" sculpture on a poster but don't miss the real thing. Artistic highlights include Gaugin's "Landscape near Arles," and works by Leger, Monet, Pissarro and Warhol. The museum houses the largest collection of J.M.W. Turner's watercolors outside of Great Britain. The Eiteljorg Gallery of African Art features thousands of pieces including Congolese masks and wooden sculptures from the Ivory Coast.

I love the art museum -- except that children are definitely NOT made welcome. The collections are great. However, when I took my well-behaved and curious children to the museum, my son (6) was very sad that he could not see any of the works on display, as they were hung at an adult eye level. When I picked him up so that he could see something other than wall, a security guard informed me that it is not permissible to carry anything -- including children -- through the museum, due to fears that the artwork would be damaged. When I asked what remedy there could be for my son, I was informed that I could bring him back on family day. So I would rate the art museum great for a date or a night out, but not a great family attraction until the kids are in high school.

  • Pros: Relaxed atmosphere
  • Cons: Not family friendly
