Editorial Review for Lulu's Restaurant & Cocktails – by Michele McCole Moss & Julia Spalding
The Scene
There's plenty of eye candy here from a sunken stream running along the edge of the concrete floor to the stylized portholes and oddly angled walls. With a cocktail in hand you won't need any more entertainment then the interior design. Friends come in droves on the weekend, so prepare to pump up the volume on your dinner conversation.
The Food
A lineup of intriguing Pan-Asian dishes like peanut-crusted chicken salad in honey-lemon vinagrette and wasabi calamari are creative combinations of flavors. If you're only meeting friends for martinis (Lulu's has a wide variety), order a few appetizers. You won't be sorry after tasting the shrimp cocktail with mango-rum dipping sauce. The warm barbecued oysters with bacon and blue cheese will make you hang around a little longer.

Although you'll find that this restaurant gets rave reviews, I have to admit that the attitudes of the employees at Lu Lu's are rather snobbish and exclusive. I noticed that I was treated with preferential treatment, but a few of my guests told me that they were not too impressed with the service. I recently relocated to Indianapolis from Mequon, Wisconsin and I was looking for a nice place with a comfortable environment that caters to professionals. On the surface Lu Lu's appears do just that, but what is missing is the exceptional service that one would normally find at a restaurant that caters to professionals. The Lu Lu's website would lead one to believe that one will "find a mix of Rolls Royce’s, Mercedes and BMWs parked out front and a wide mix of people inside enjoying dinner and live entertainment." However, the night I went, the crowd consisted of a rather homogonous group patrons under 30 and a parking lot devoid of Rolls Royces, Mercedeses, or BMW's or any other symbols assoicated with an upscale following. In fact, I believe that the poor service is related to the fact that Lu Lu's only wants to cater to a specific group of people and if you do not fit in the category of people that they aim to please, you will be left out in the cold. I totally understand and support an establishment's right to have rules and policies to maintain a certain atmosphere. However, I do not believe that those rules and policies should be at the expense of providing exceptional service to ALL of the customers regardless of the Lu Lu's employees' opinions about where a customer fits in the socio-economic totem pole.
Pros: Parking, Food
Cons: Snobbish, Rude Employees

Yesterday at Lu Lu's I observed the staff at Lu Lu's (including the manager and assistant manager) causing a major scene. They directed their antagonism toward a group of individuals who appeared to be dressed professionally and who carried themselves in a manner that one would expect and encourage in an upscale establishment. It is unclear why the Lu Lu's servers felt that it was necessary to behave in an unprofessonal manner towards them, but I quickly deduced that the group somehow did not fit their "profile" of desireable patrons. When a member of the group discussed his concerns with the manager, I even overheard the manager telling him not to try to play the "race card". Although I am not black, I was offended by this and I was equally offended when I observed other tables of persons who did not fit a certain "profile" being passed over for service while certain other tables were given friendly, attentive service. I also find it interesting that Lu Lu's has a restrictive dress code for the patrons, but the servers at Lu Lu's can wear untucked shirts and wear barely there skirts and tops the size of postage stamps. I have been to countless upscale establishments and have never seen such unprofessional dress and unprofessional behavior.
Pros: Caters to patrons who fit their "profile"
Cons: Extremely antagonistic and dismissive toward those who do not fit their "profile"
