This is a classic example of urban planning. Aside from the mostly silent people doing the ambulating, the place is lifeless. No cozy cafes, no taco stands, no curiosity shops. Since you look mostly at blank buildings as you stroll, the canal might just as well have been built in a penitentiary. The nearby White River slices through Indianapolis, and it is barren of waterside restaurants or virtually anything else of interest. Planning and zoning in American cities have replaced spontaneity with sterile habitats that value order over life. Americans hate surprises.
Pros: Walking place
Cons: Planned dullness

The first place I took my wife on our first date was the Canal. From that day on we hardly spent any time apart. I really think it set the tone for our romantic evening. A great place to impress a date, not to mention first kisses.
Pros: Scenery, Quiet, Murals
Cons: , needs restaurants
