Editorial Review for Imperial City – by Marc Allan

The Scene
This restaurant is rarely extremely busy, which is surprising considering how good the food is. Diners include everyone from families to couples sitting at tables and high-backed booths. Traditional Chinese music plays quietly. Waitresses nod politely as they take orders, and bus boys are forever scurrying to fill your water glass.

The Food
Start with a pu-pu platter: You get meaty spare ribs, tender teriyaki beef, juicy chicken wings, crabmeat rangoon and chicken sticks. Among the 60 or so entree choices, the Mongolian beef (sweet, wine-flavored shreds of beef with onions and scallions) is always worthwhile. Good, too, is the moo goo gai pan (delicate slices of chicken with mushrooms, carrots and broccoli in a chicken broth). Jade scallops features fresh sea scallops with broccoli, snow peas and mushrooms in a light sauce that could use more flavor to enhance the scallops.

My wife and I love going to Chinese buffet resteraunts. We had been going to one up Keystone a mile or two, and loved it. This one has a better selection of foods my wife likes (i.e. non-spicy) and we get out the door almost $1 cheaper. When you enter, you pay and order your drink. Not only do they have soft drinks, but it looks like they have a bar, although the days we have went it was quiet, and we didn't feel like asking. You can get your food and sit and eat while the waiter brings your your drink. I have gone through one round (I don't pile my plate high) before getting the drink however. The food is a delightful blend. From the common (General Tao's Chicken) to things I don't normally see (pork fried potstickers... mmmmmm) this place serves it up right. The desert bar is missing bananas and strawberry sauce (I thought it was mandatory at Chinese buffet) but there is a wide assortment of pastries to keep you busy. That and some good fruit, too. There is a sushi bar and a salad bar as well, but on the days I was there they sat empty. The ice cream machine was also empty, although as I write this it is winter. All in all, this is a good resteraunt, a great resteraunt for the price. I highly reccommend it.

Pros: Good food, lots of it.

Cons: Sometimes slow service
