Editorial Review for On The Border Mexican Grill – by Lori Lovely

The Scene
Rugged yuccas, horsetail grass and rocks staged artfully in front of the colorful stucco cantina boldly depart from the sedate Hoosier setting. Mustard and purple walls adorned with bright talavera pottery, maracas and Mexican hats compel cheerfulness. In the open cantina, divided by a fireplace; under the lights on the patio; or in the bar, with TVs, beer bottle chandeliers and rustic lamps under a tin ceiling, this spot offers a dynamic setting for lively conversations.

The Food
Quesadillas, tacos and burritos are fine for novices, but only those with a hearty appetite and asbestos tongue dare attempt the generously proportioned specialties like the "Big Bordurrito" and the mesquite-grilled "Borderita Grande". Complete the theme with the spicy house jalapeno vinaigrette on a salad, save room for sweet treats like the Key lime margarita torte, served in strawberry puree and drizzled with kiwi glace.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

Under no circumstances leave without imbibing a Mercedes Margarita (made with Cuervo 1800 and Grand Marnier) or an OTB Meltdown (a margarita topped off with Midori, Chambord, Cointreau or your favorite tequila).

Know Before You Go

Go to the head of the waiting list with call-ahead seating. Although OTB doesn't accept official reservations, you'll look like a VIP as you bypass the waiting throng. Place a call half an hour before your expected arrival. Unless your party is unusually large, it will be seated with minimal delay.

On the border is a great name for this location. It is on the border of good and bad, not leaning one way or the other. There is plenty of food for a reasonable price, though it has never been great, just ok. Drinks are over priced and the service in my three visits has never been great. I expect more.

Pros: clean

Tasted like Taco Bell, nothing tasted fresh or homemade, straight out of the can.

Pros: Great Service

Cons: Mediocre food
