No I don't want the Shrimp Cocktail. After repeatedly telling the waiter we didn't want the cocktail the service went downhill from there. My Prime Rib was overcooked as was my wife's strip. Terrible rolls and awful sides. Navy Bean or tomato juice? Iceberg lettuce not Romaine? I really wanted to like this place. I live in Chicago but go to Colts games, and it came highly recommended. What type of steak place doesn't offer a T-Bone? Overall, overhyped and overpriced. Sorry but we won't be returning. Many more downtown Indy restaurants to choose from rather than Elmo's.
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. There were six of us at dinner. 3 out of 6 had problems with their steak. My steak had a vein running through it bigger than any of my own. Fat galore on a 34 dollar steak! I've honestly had a better steak for 9.99 at Logans Steakhouse! Rolls were extremely hard even for hard rolls! Entrance is smokey and over crowded you can't move. We walked down 3 flights of steps to our table in some small back room. My sister who came all the way from Cinncinnatti to eat here, complained to the management and got a $50 gift certificate for her next time. What next time? A $100 meal for two....the steak should be edible! Horrible...Horrible...Horrible! What a waste of money. I'm sure someone else will come on here and post from St. Elmos so their score stays high!
Over-rated. After much anticipation to dine here, I found it overpriced and disappointing. First, I could not be seated until my "date" arrived. (He was parking and was enough of a gentleman to drop me at the door...) Next, if I heard the suggestive sell of "try our shrimp cocktail" one more time, I was going to hold up a sign stating, "No, I don't want fries with that..." The food was fair. In all, it was very overpriced for the quality. I have traveled and dined extensively and would not visit here again. The only bright spot here was our waiter. He was immensely gracious, made a lovely wine recommendation and kept my husband's food warm while he had to go outside momentarily to answer a cell call.
Don't miss. Great place. Food was outstanding, wine selection was unbelievable. service was great, price was what you would expect. In my opinion if you are going to Indy for one night and had to choose where to eat, this should be the place as much for the history as anything else, although the "anything else" certainly stands on its own.
Awesome Steak & Service. First time to St. Elmos. Saw a famous QB and his family, found out they (men) liked Cigars and luckily had some good ones, my nephew was floored when he got the autograph. Well on to the food and service, steak was one of the best, my personal fav. is Chop House in Chicago, but this place comes close, first class service. Highly Recommended!
Over-rated steaks. Visited 2 times and ordered fillets (which had come highly recommended). Below average steaks both times. First time, it tasted of meat tenderizer, 2nd time it was tasteless. The service was fantastic, but it can't make up for the poor quality of meat. I am very disappointed in my visits and would not recommend their steaks.
User review by ham56. St Elmos is a great throwback to the classic steakhouse. You can often find Peyton Manning or somebody similar at the bar and the shrimp cocktail has a horseradish sauce that will clear any sinus congestion. Our waiters have always been wonderful and knowledgeable, but maybe a bit gruff in the tradition of the Palm or one of the NY steakhouses. The wine cellar is wonderful -- ask for a tour after dinner. Plan to spend some time and some money, but savour the food and the atmosphere -- no place in Chicago or NY has a leg up on it for either food or mood (loud, but sociable).
St. Elmos ...it's only a famous name..
I have visited St. Elmos several times over the years hoping that some day that I too could bathe in Steak bliss like so many others claimed to have done over the years. However Elmo's always leaves me feeling somewhat dissapointed.
The place has a nice ambience - kind of a "guy" type of joint.
The steaks are mediocre at best. I think they are way overated.
I will give St. Elmos one thing: The Best Shrimp Cocktail in America. Shrimp are always large (even in the Summer months) and cooked to perfection. Not to Raw and not to soggy just right and topped off with just flat out great Cocktail Sauce!
If you are looking for an OK steak with a must have, to die for, best shrimp Cocktail in America. Then St. Elmos is for you.
Don't get your hopes up to high.
SE Indiana Marketing Director. After two attempts at dining here, I give it overall extremely poor performance and quality. MANDITORY 20% gratuity? Ok fine, but I want MANDITORY service, NOT cold baked potatoes (butter NEVER melted!!) after being replaced TWO TIMES! No fresh ground pepper, steaks soooo dry they NEEDED steak sauce. One trip here and possibly a bad night. Two trips here and the only change was in my fleeced pockets! Drink heavily to soften the blow!
Fantastic!. Being a huge Colts fan, my husband and I were in town for the highly anticipated Colts-Packers game. After reading the reviews on St. Elmo, I was leary to try it at first. But I like to form my own opinion, and I figured they must be doing something right if they've been around since 1902! I am glad that I gave it a chance. It was extremely busy, yet we were seated immediately at our reservation time, and did not have to wait. The Server was very professional and knowledgeable. And my husband and I enjoyed the best steak we have ever had, and we've lived in Chicago for a number of years. I also loved the exciting atmosphere and the jazz band that was playing in the bar area. Superb, an overall 10+ experience!
