Editorial Review for St. Elmo Steak House – by Julia Spalding

In Short
Not only is St. Elmo Indy's first steak restaurant, it's Indy's original restaurant, period. What has worked since 1902, from the traditional charbroiling method to the dark wood and gaslight-era decor, still works today at this downtown landmark. Each cut is lightly seasoned and aged for 18 to 21 days before it hits the extreme temperature of the broiler, a simple but fastidious standard that produces consistently superb meat.

Had dinner with a group of 10, I always heard that St.Elmo's was the place to be. It's just not for me. The steaks are over rated, over priced, and absolutly no flavor what so ever. And who in the world told the chef that navy beans go with steak? It was a total waste of money. I would never recommend to anyone. Ruths Chris has nothing to worry about.

My friends and I enjoyed the best steak and service ever. We still talk about the experience and are planning a return trip to Indy just to enjoy St. Elmo's. We're fairly well traveled and have enjoyed many steakhouses across the country but found that this steak deserves it's 'best of' rating. It is not intended for children. Thank goodness.

Pros: Delicious

Cons: Crowded

Editor's Review

The steak is properly aged and the portions are substantial at the oldest steak house in the city.  See the full editorial review.
